The founder Carl F. Powell Jr. or Calco, a self-proclaimed traditionalist, reflects through his music not only enthusiasm and creativity, but also maturity that can stand the test of time, states Calco, “I was born and raised on tiny St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands and I want to leave a mark.”
Unique–often defined as not typical or unusual–aptly applies to Calco. “I love good music; any style…they all have something to offer,” he explains. With a personal music collection that covers most genres, in his leisure, he is just as likely to be relaxing to Bach, as he would be to Caribbean artists such as Bob Marley or Buju Banton. Not the typical iPod playlist.
His own music reflects his vast musical interests. At first listen a particular track could sound funky and another time Latin; all while being used by a Hip-Hop artist.
Not only does he have the technical ability to rival contemporary producers, but Calco is also a skilled musician and teacher; two skills that prove invaluable when working with artists.
With a Bachelor’s Degree in music education and 7 years experience working in public schools, Calco is highly equipped with the tools needed to communicate with artists. As he says, “working with students ages 4 to 18 truly prepares you to deal with different personalities.” More important, he knows how to teach musical concepts and has a profound musical vocabulary.
A drummer seemingly from birth, Calco has been performing since the age of 8. This love of performing manifested into a serious passion. “Playing drums on a small Island wasn’t enough for me,” he states, and a Master’s Degree was inevitable. He is now proficient in numerous forms of percussion and drumming techniques and styles from all around the world.
A performer himself, Calco has the ability to relate to artists on their level. His tracks are dynamic; ever changing, unscripted, boundless, and free. Artists will feel comfortable because his talents make him flexible.
To add more icing, with two years of music engineering school under his belt, and 5 years working with Protools, he produces tracks that are edited, mixed and mastered radio-ready.
His inescapable musical maturity will capture your attention, but it is his rhythms, instrumentation and blending of genres that will draw you into his musical world, and ultimately leave you longing for more. “Audiences will relate to my music because it will be catchy and fiery…it will relate to their passions!”
