Artist:
From the years when she was with the band Reel Time Travelers, and since the release of her critically acclaimed solo album, The West Was Burning, Martha Scanlan has been touring and headlining festivals across the the U.S. and Europe. For the past two years Martha has been living and cowboying on a remote Montana ranch down near the Wyoming border, living in a decades old cotton-wood log cabin where she has had the peace and wilderness-quiet to write a new set of songs, the songs of the Tongue River Stories project.

Martha first gained national attention for her songwriting at the prestigious Chris Austin songwriting contest at Merlefest in 2004.

Produced by T-Bone Burnett, her voice was featured on the sound track for the film Cold Mountain, directed by Anthony Minghella.

She was featured on the Great High Mountain tour along with Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, Norman and Nancy Blake.

Her first solo album, The West Was Burning, featuring production by gifted multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell and performances by Levon Helm (of The Band) and Amy Helm, was released in 2006 by Sugar Hill Records to critical acclaim. Dirty Linen called it * A revelation, an instant classic and one of those rare albums that defies genre and generation. Scanlan evokes western landscapes as effectively as Georgia O’Keefe did on canvass. *

Her song Little Bird Of Heaven, was recently featured in celebrated American novelist Joyce Carol Oates latest book by the same name (a new version of the song recorded with Dirk Powell is available for download at iTunes and amazon.com).

Her new project, Tongue River Stories ( www.TongueRiverStories.com ) is a collection of songs about belonging and place. It comes out of her recent relative hiatus from the road, where she has been immersed in living and working on a hundred year-old ranch in the southeast corner of Montana, one of the last and truest strongholds of a uniquely American cowboy culture. The project is a collaboration with award-winning film maker Dawson Dunning, who is a fifth generation descendant from one of these old ranching families.
